What is homeopathy?

homeopathy1

Homeopathy is a gentle deeply healing system of medicine. It uses healing substances that are so diluted, that do not cause side effects unlike conventional pharmaceuticals. It works with the body's own healing energy (Vital Force) to strengthen it and views symptoms of illness as normal responses of the body, as it attempts to regain health.

Homeopathy is a gentle, holistic system of healing, suitable for everyone, young and old. It focuses on you as an individual, concentrating on treating your specific physical and emotional symptoms, to give long lasting benefits.

Correct homeopathy treatment brings about a profound sense of well being before it even begins to relieve initial symptoms. Treatment for a chronic disease begins with a detailed consultation with the Homeopath, who strives to reach into the emotional and / or mental trauma that might have been the trigger in the first place.

Homeopathy can offer health care, which is both effective and extremely economical. It does not create resistance but uses extremely small doses of natural substances to stimulate the body's innate healing powers. Homeopathic remedies are non-toxic and non-addictive and are totally individual to the patient for both, acute and chronic illnesses. By treating benign acute incidents or illnesses, patients can save a lot of money while contributing greatly to their own well being and healing.

The ultimate goal of homeopathic treatment goes beyond relieving symptoms and even beyond preventing recurrence, which homeopathy excels at. It seeks the remedy which will help the patient to live to their fullest capacity, whether mentally, emotionally, spiritually, socially, and physically. It is trully rewarding to witness patients using their newfound health and energy in fulfilling their destined role in life. Hahnemann expressed this concept beautifully, defining health as the state in which "our indwelling, rational spirit can freely avail itself on this living, healthy instrument (the body) for the higher purpose of our existence."

Therefore, Homeopathy requires more than just knowledge. Homeopathy is based on affection for our patients, respect for the human condition, and compassion towards the foibles and weaknesses of humanity.

History

Homeopathy has been widely used throughout the world for more than 200 years. It began in the late 1700s, and it is a scientific method of medicine developed by a German doctor named Samuel Hahnemann (1775-1843), as an alternative to the then pre-scientific conventional medicine of the day such as bloodletting, purging, emetics and other practices.

He was a Renaissance medical genius, gifted in many fields: fluent in 7 languages, pharmacy, psychiatry, public health, sanitation as well as medicine. As far as we know, he is the only person in history to have envisioned an entire system of medicine and then fully developed it into a powerful tool, within the span of a single lifetime. He was a true visionary whose understanding of the energetic basis of health and healing anticipated by a century the paradigm of matter as energy in modern physics. Allopathic medicine has barely begun to incorporate an understanding of the mind-body connection, which Hahnemann delineated two centuries ago.

He was disillusioned with the often-harsh treatments that were being used at the time and was looking for a more natural and gentle way to treat illnesses. Considered a rebel in his approach to medicine, he caused much controversy in promoting homeopathy, which was never accepted by the wider medical community.

Homeopathic medicine is based on several eternal laws of nature and views symptoms of illness as normal responses of the body as it attempts to regain health. The first one, Law of Similars or Like cure Like, had been formulated centuries earlier by Hippocrates, considered the father of medicine. The principle of similarity had been applied intuitively by traditional healing methods, but Homeopathy is the first scientific application of the Law of Similars.

The concept is that substances that cause symptoms in healthy people, such as raw onions causing sore, tearful eyes, can be used in extreme dilution to treat illnesses, which have the same symptoms. In this example, extract of raw onion could be used as an ingredient (extremely diluted) in a remedy to treat colds, flu, or other illnesses that produce the same symptoms. Hence, a homeopathic remedy creates a similar (not the same) ''artificial disease'' picture, which helps the body to organize its defences. As the body's vital energy pushes back like a rebound effect against the ''shadow disease'' created by the remedy, it also pushes the actual disease from the inside to the outside. A homeopathic remedy is thus an almost infinitesimally small dose of a medication, which – if given in a substantially stronger dose to a healthy individual – would provoke similar symptoms to those presented by the patient.

Remedies are ''proved'' on healthy people. Typically a group of 50 to 100 volunteers receive a mild dose of the remedy daily, for 6 weeks and all their reactions are recorded, whether physical, mental or emotional. Clinical experience revealed that the remedy can then be used effectively curing the same symptoms in-patient. This is the only scientific way of knowing the action of a remedy (rather than the conventional methods of testing medicines either on sick people whose energy is already depleted, or on animals that can not report feedback and are different from humans in many ways, including on their reactions to medications).

Curative and Safe

When correctly applied, homeopathic treatment can assist the body in restoring its health so completely that over time, medical treatment for most "conditions" can be discontinued. It is not uncommon for patients to recover from serious disorders such as high blood pressure, allergies, depression, asthma, diabetes, rheumatism, and many other chronic disorders as a result of individualized homeopathic treatment. Moreover, homeopathy can help the body overcome lesser ailments like sore throats, coughs, flu, acute respiratory and other infections, menstrual problems, ingrown toenails, headaches, insomnia and more. In fact homeopathy can provide help towards any condition or ailment! Highly diluted remedies that act gently and safely. Rather than inhibiting natural functions (i.e. using "anti-inflammatories" to suppress inflammation) homeopathy works by enhancing the whole body's innate healing powers to restore one back to health. Homeopathic remedies stimulate curative responses in the body that can be measured by scientific means and tests whilst not known to produce any side effects.

Homeopathy versus Allopathy

Homeopathy does not address 'diseases' as such, but rather 'sick people' as individuals. This might seem as a too fine of a difference, but has proved to be a pivotally insightful distinction between homeopathy and allopathy nevertheless.

When Hahnemann devised this new system of medicine called Homeopathy more than two centuries ago, science had not progressed to today's levels. The majority of sciences – be it physics, chemistry, biology, or medicine – at the time, were focused on the basis of matter and the whole aim of treatment was on the physical state. Overtime, new hypothesis develop and conventional medicine modify their treatments accordingly.

Though Hahnemann was correct in his findings, he could not explain the physical basis of homeopathy, as homeopathic medicines deal primarily with energy and not with matter, being dynamic in nature. However homeopathy as a science, follows laws and principles, which remain unchanged over two centuries.

At the present, nearly all the so-called allopathic "wonder-drugs" are failing. Bacteria have become more resistant, new viruses are still on the increase, diseases are occurring in spite of vaccinations, and the long-term side-effects of allopathic drugs are being realized.

Allopathic (conventional) medicine is in a devastating financial crisis, with hospitals going bankrupt and around us and millions of people lacking adequate health insurance; homeopathy can offer health care, that is effective, free of side effects and extremely cost effective.

Thus, interest in homeopathy has seen an increase in recent years. There are more than one hundred thousand practitioners worldwide.

There are numerous homeopathic training institutions including medical colleges and research centers around the world, specialist pharmacies and many governments that have given homeopathy a legal status on a par with that of allopathy. It is encouranging to witness more universities opening special seats for Homeopathy. It is estimated that well over a million of patients worldwide are currently benefiting from homeopathic treatment. Moreover, there has to be a good reason for eleven U.S. Presidents, seven popes, other leading physicians and scientists who used and/or advocated for homeopathy, including Sir William Osler (the "father of modern medicine"), Emil Adolph von Behring (the "father of immunology"), August Bier, MD (the "father of spinal anesthesia"), Harold Griffith, MD (founding president of the World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists), Charles Frederick Menninger, MD (founder of the Menninger Clinic), and C. Everett Koop, MD (former Surgeon General of the United States) amongst others, who have been known to benefit from homeopathy.
Furthermore, there have been many clinical studies, which have clearly shown the efficacy of homeopathic treatment.

An increased understanding of energy physics, technological improvements combined with conceptual advances have led homeopathic research in new directions that are already bearing fruit. For example NMR research has shown that it is possible to differentiate homeopathic medicines from pure alcohol and water, because their spectroscopic pattern is different. It is possible to differentiate one medicine from other and one potency from other. However, Homeopathic studies remain in an embryonic state with lack of funds and facilities, inhibiting its further development. In addition energy physics, itself, is in an evolving phase.

Our understanding of electrons is evolving. We moved from believing that electrons were matter, then energy and now it is common believe that they are both. Until very recently it was believed that the speed of light could not be surpassed. Recent discoveries have also disproved this. Science is a voyage of discovery where the unexplained is merely phenomena, yet not understood.

Let me finish with the words of Master Hahnemann, in which I truly believe and although written over two centuries ago, still relevant and contemporary "at the present homeopathy grows with slow progress amid the abundance of weeds which luxuriate about it. It grows unobserved, from an unlikely acorn into a little plant. Soon may its head be seen overtopping the tall weeds. Be patient – it is striking its roots deep into the earth. It is strengthening itself unperceived but all the more certainly in its own time it will increase, until it becomes an oak of God, whose arms stretch that the suffering children of men may be revived under its beneficent shadow" (Leipzig, September 1815, Letter to his close friend Dr Stapf).
